Cesena is able to suit even the most demanding requirements of different kinds of tourists, since it is permeated with ancient traditions, history and art, but also gathers lively clubs, shops and discos.
Cesena's old town, which is wholly surrounded by imposing medieval walls, cherishes plenty of outstanding monuments and buildings. During the Renaissance, it was ruled by the powerful Malatesta Family, and the city's town layout and major historic-artistic architectures date back to that period. Not to be missed are the Malatesta Fortress and Library, the latter being the first civic library in Europe whose architecture and collection are regarded to be some of the most important masterpieces in Romagna.
The main streets of the city centre, which are peppered with elegant hotels belonging to different categories, are Corso Mazzini, a lively street dominated by the beautiful Gothic Duomo, Contrada Chiaramonti, which is peppered with sumptuous stately homes and manor houses, and the streets that depart from the central Piazza del Popolo, which are dotted with elegant outdoor cafeterias, trendy shops and glamorous boutiques. Cesena also gathers wonderful public gardens, which develop along the south-eastern city walls and are often the venue for important summer concerts and events.
Cesena's racetrack, which is open several evenings a week, gives tourists the possibility to spend special nights here. The lovers of food and wine products will have the possibility to visit the charming farm houses of the surrounding hills and taste excellent Romagna-style dishes accompanied by fine Sangiovese wine. Not to be missed is the popular Festival of St. Giovanni, which is held here on June 24 and turns the city into a huge open-air stage.
