Valconca is one of the most appreciated areas of Rimini's hinterland. It is punctuated with wonderful medieval castles which were built during the period of fierce fighting between the powerful Malatesta and Montefeltro families. Castles Valconca - Province of Rimini
The itinerary which develops around Valconca leads visitors across the wonderful historic places and lush hills of the hinterland of Rimini. They will have the opportunity to visit the majestic castles of Montefiore Conca, Mondaino and Montegridolfo, as well as to visit the splendid Malatesta villages of San Giovanni in Marignano and Saludecio.
The two impressive fortresses of Monte Cerignone and Gradara are situated a short distance from this area, on the boundaries with the Marches. The first one dominates the whole Valconca, while the second commands Cattolica's coastline. They are the ideal destinations for those interested in spending pleasant moments in the open air.
Fortresses of Montefiore Conca, Mondaino and Montegridolfo
Montefiore Conca is situated just in the heart of Valconca, and nestles amidst the lush hills that rise left of Morciano di Romagna. This lovely town, which has been included in the prestigious list of the most beautiful villages in Italy for many years now, gives tourists the possibility to visit its impressive fortified old town and imposing fortress, the latter gazing across the city's streets and houses from on high. This majestic castle, which was commissioned by the Malatesta Family in the Middle Ages, boasts impressive walls and steep inner staircases. Its wide panoramic terrace gives visitors the possibility to enjoy breathtaking views over the whole Riviera Romagnola and Montefeltro mountains
Once left Montefiore Conca, tourists will have the possibility to head to the nearby Saludecio and then reach Mondaino. It boasts an impressive fortified old town of great beauty and is dominated by an imposing fortress, which were both commissioned by the Malatesta Family. Mondaino's most representative landmark is its central exedra-shaped Piazza Maggiore, which is often the venue for amazing shows and events, such as the famous Palio de Lo Daino.
Montegridolfo, which is situated a short distance from Mondaino, is especially appreciated for its perfectly preserved imposing city walls. The lovely old town is dominated by a majestic castle, Palazzo Viviani, which now hosts a luxury hotel. The city's major monuments and buildings are the entrance gate, which is surmounted by a high Clock Tower, and the church of St. Rocco.
Castles of Monte Cerignone and Gradara
Monte Cerignone is situated just in the heart of the hinterland of Valconca. Its picturesque old town, which is scattered with charming houses and buildings, rises on the top of an impressive rock spur.
The city's castle, which was totally restored in the fifteenth century by Federico da Montefeltro, was designed by the illustrious architect Francesco di Giorgio Martini. It is now the seat of the local municipality.
Gradara is one of the most spectacular castles in Italy. It was commissioned by the Malatesta family and then repeatedly remodelled over the course of the years. Tourists will have the opportunity to admire its impressive bulwarks and visit the large inner museum.
