The Castles of Romagna
A dive into the Middle Ages. Those interested in spending pleasant seaside holidays in the Riviera Romagnola will also have the possibility to visit the picturesque villages, old towns and impressive castles of the surrounding area.
The territories included between Bologna, Ravenna and Rimini have always been the seat of fierce fighting. In his famous Divine Comedy, Dante wrote “Romagna thine is not and never has been without war…” This led to the construction of numerous castles both on the top of the Apennine's peaks and along the coastline.
Romagna was alternately ruled by a large number of noble families, who between the XIII and the XVI century tried to expand their domain across Rimini, Cesena, Faenza, Forlì and Ravenna: Malatesta in Rimini, Montefeltro in Urbino, Medici and Conti Guidi from Tuscany, Ordelaffi in Forlì, Manfredi in Faenza, Alidosi in Imola, Sforza from Milano, Este in Ferrara, Traversari and Da Polenta in Ravenna. Not to be missed is Cesare Borgia, the notorious Duke of Valentinois.
